Periodontal Laser Therapy

Gum disease affects over 50% of the US population. It is the number-one reason that we lose our teeth. To stay healthy, your teeth need the support of healthy, bacteria-free gums. Thanks to our advanced periodontal care, we can work together to help you avoid tooth loss.

All of our patients are evaluated for gum disease. The most effective way to determine the condition of your gums is to have your dentist, or dental hygienist, use a calibrated instrument to measure the attachment of gum and bone to the tooth. Measurements of 4 mm or greater, along with bleeding, indicate active periodontal infection.

Medical research suggests that there is a direct relationship between gum disease and chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease as well as preterm/low birthweight babies.

It is imperative that pregnant women, along with patients with these chronic diseases, schedule for a dental hygiene visit every three months to eliminate any active infection as to not worsen their condition.

Scaling & Root Planing

Brushing and flossing alone may not be enough if you have active gum disease. You may need a special kind of deeper cleaning called scaling and root planing. We use a topical (gel) anesthesia to keep you comfortable. We use an ultrasonic cleaner along with hand instruments to remove plaque and tartar beneath your gumline, where you do not have access to cleaning yourself. We then smooth the root surfaces. These procedures allow your gum tissue to heal and reattach itself to your teeth.

Laser Periodontal Therapy

Following scaling and root planing, we use a soft-tissue dental laser, which eliminates bacteria that collect around the gums and roots of the teeth and cause gum disease. The laser is a beam of light that attracts itself to the diseased tissue and the bacteria, which thrive in the warm, moist areas around your teeth and gums. There is no cutting and patients find the laser very relaxing.
